Pachinko by Min Jin Lee Chapter Review

The Skinny

(aka Back of the Book Summary in a Sentence)

Korean immigrants are looked down upon in early 20th century Japan.

Nutritional Value

(aka What’s Good)

Min Jin Lee did a really good job of making Hoonie likable. Good job. I don’t want to ruin it, but this chapter is like the first 5 minutes of Up. So I enjoyed this because it made me so sad.

Freezer Burn

(aka What’s Bad)

So many people died of diseases and it made me sad. This takes place in the early 1900s, but I didn’t know that dying from diseases was so rampant. And I thought getting a cold was bad.

Lingering Aftertaste

(aka My Prediction)

This follows the life of Sunja. I have no idea where this rabbit hole will go. This is like the first song of Hamilton. She probably learns to prosper despite discrimination.

Taste Test Verdict

(aka Would I Read More?)

This deserves a second scoop. This pulled me in like a black hole.

Memorable Morsel

(aka Quotable Quote)

Look at how Hoonie is described. Love this kid!

If it were possible for a man and his wife to share one heart, Hoonie was this steady beating organ.

Do you have something that brings together you and a significant other? Let me know in the comments!
