The Skinny
(aka Back of the Book Summary in a Sentence)
Simon is the Chosen One, but he’s not good at it at all.
Nutritional Value
(aka What’s Good)
This was like a sassier Harry Potter. Simon is an orphan who attends the Watford School of Magicks just like how Harry is an orphan who attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But Simon has more attitude. Also, this is written in first person, so you can really get into Simon’s sarcastic head.
Freezer Burn
(aka What’s Bad)
Was this a Harry Potter fan fiction that got published? Like, that’s a legitimate question. I’m being Sirius. Okay, got that joke out of my system. Now I’m being serious. Simon and Harry are both orphans, Chosen Ones, British, and they both start attending a magic school when they’re eleven years old.
Also, neither of them even knows they have magic powers until they’re eleven. Which leads me to another question. What makes eleven such a good year for starting magic school? You know what I was doing when I was eleven? Starting junior high with a bunch of Muggles.
Lingering Aftertaste
(aka My Prediction)
Harry defeated Voldemort, so I’m pretty sure Simon will defeat Humdrum. Harry got the girl, so I’m also pretty sure Simon will get the guy.
Taste Test Verdict
(aka Would I Read More?)
I’m actually not sure how I feel about this one. I normally love books that have magic, dragons, and vampires, but I think I’m leaning towards just watching the movie adaptation of this if there ever is one.
Memorable Morsel
(aka Quotable Quote)
You know who else takes a train to get to school? Harry Potter.
The closer I get to Watford, the more restless I feel. Every year, I think about jumping from the train and spelling myself the rest of the way to school, even if it puts me in a coma.

Gwen thinks that it’s as close to magic as humans can get when a blank Word document is filled with groups of letters, and those groups of letters turn into lines, and those lines turn into a whole new world.
When Gwen isn’t reading or writing, she’s drinking boba milk tea and singing along to Steven Universe. You should sing along with her.
