The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry Chapter Review

The Skinny

(aka Back of the Book Summary in a Sentence)

A recent widow decides to go monster hunting.

Nutritional Value

(aka What’s Good)

It has a good moral: Don’t go skinny dipping at midnight.

Freezer Burn

(aka What’s Bad)

I’m American, so reading this was confusing. First off, I’m definitely not familiar with the locations. Second, 2 out of 3 sentences aren’t necessary. Lastly, there’s some vocabulary I’m not familiar with, like pip, estuary, strop, and vicar. I’d probably need to navigate this book with an English dictionary.

Lingering Aftertaste

(aka My Prediction)

The widow, Cora, and the vicar, Will, end up together. The serpent is some mix between both of their beliefs, which makes them both right and enables them to forge a relationship.

Taste Test Verdict

(aka Would I Read More?)

Probably not. Sad to say, I had to read it twice. You’d think with more description, one pass would be enough. Nope.

Memorable Morsel

(aka Quotable Quote)

What does this even mean?

oh, what a sinner he’s been – what a black pip there is at his core!

Tell me what you think it is in the comments below!
