Soulful Simplicity: How Living with Less Can Lead to So Much More by Courtney Carver Chapter Review

The Skinny

(aka Back of the Book Summary in a Sentence)

When Carver is diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she learns that in life, less can actually be more.

Nutritional Value

(aka What’s Good)

This was a gripping tale. Usually I read fiction where none of the characters are actually real. None of them are on this planet right now, living, breathing, suffering, surviving. But every character in this book is real, because a real person wrote it about her real life.

So reading about how Carver was diagnosed with MS and the fear and stress that goes hand-in-hand with something as life-altering as that left a far more visceral impact than a fictional character’s experience would. And I’m certain that’s the kind of impact Carver wanted to make.

Freezer Burn

(aka What’s Bad)

The way Carver described being in an MRI machine was terrifying and now I’m pretty sure I have a phobia of MRI machines.

Lingering Aftertaste

(aka My Prediction)

I’m pretty sure the early part of the book is about Carver’s journey with MS, and the latter part of the book will be about what she learned from it. Those lessons will probably be about how the bigger picture is what matters, and that it’s essential to declutter our lives so all that’s left is what’s really important.

Taste Test Verdict

(aka Would I Read More?)

I would definitely want to keep reading this book. Carver seems so strong for being able to live with MS and teach the rest of us what she learned about life so we can have better lives ourselves. And who doesn’t want to live a better life?

Memorable Morsel

(aka Quotable Quote)

I would not want this doctor.

She said she had to call me back. Three minutes later, she called back and said, “Oops. I was looking at the wrong chart. Yep, you have MS.”

What would you do if your doctor tells you that you don’t have a life-changing disease, and then a few minutes later casually says she was reading the wrong thing and that you actually do? Sound off in the comments below!

Gwen thinks that it’s as close to magic as humans can get when a blank Word document is filled with groups of letters, and those groups of letters turn into lines, and those lines turn into a whole new world.

When Gwen isn’t reading or writing, she’s drinking boba milk tea and singing along to Steven Universe. You should sing along with her.
